How do I go about getting my name out about being an event consultant?

February 14, 2010 - 5:00 pm 2 Comments

I am currently employed full-time as an events specialist at a new york based PR Firm. However, I would like to eventually be self-employed and work as an event’s consultant- primarily for corportate events. My goal is to be able to create my own schedule and work from home, while doing what I love to do-events! Any ideas how to get the word out besides a cold call?

NETWORK! Find out what kind of special events organizations are around and take active roles in them (your current job may actually pay the membership fees!). Join groups likeInternational Special Events Society, Meeting Planners International, and or your local Convention Bureau. The events business is cliquish, you have to know people. And, you have to be aroud a while because lots of people get in and out of the events business thinking its all glamourous and thus the players keep their distance until they know you are gonna be around for a while. Check out those groups…

How can I start my own event planning business?

February 7, 2010 - 10:45 am 2 Comments

I already have done some event planning for the nonprofit I work for, but am interested in branching off and starting my own wedding & event planning company. What is the best way to do this?

You can start by having a steady source of income so that you don’t have to rely on your business for food and rent (at least at first).

If you’ve got access to some money, the best way to get yourself out there is to advertise.

Cheap ways are flyers (stick them under the windshields of cars at wedding shops), ads in local circulars or newspapers, etc.

Do some research into the best places to hold events, furniture & equipment rentals, caterering, etc. so that you can maximize profits while still beating the competition on price (without skimping).

Like most things, it can be hard to get started, and you aren’t guaranteed anything - but if it is something you like to do, then go for it!

How does the person hosting a charity event make money?

January 6, 2010 - 4:02 pm 6 Comments

I’m confused on how the person that is hosting a charity event would make their money. For example: Let’s say someone’s hosting a casino charity event, and all the money that the people loose goes to the cause. So how does the person that host’s the event make any money? Or doesn’t he? Does he just do it to get brownie points for his karma? But then how do big charity organizations make their money, who pays them?
And wouldn’t the people loose many because they have to spend the money to rent all the game tables?

The person operating the event is a volunteer and 100% of money raised goes to the charity or they are a professional fundraiser that contracted with the charity for a percentage of the proceeds.
Some take as much as 60%

What was one major event during the Auschwitz time?

January 3, 2010 - 3:44 pm 3 Comments

Okay i have no idea what i have to do. & i ABSOLUTELY NEED YOUR HELP!
I need you to choose one major event that defined Auschwitz. Please explain in detail [in another paragraph] why this was a defining event for Auschwitz.

How about WWII? It’s got everything: bloodshed, explosions, atomic bombs, Nazis, warfare, even a guy named Tojo.

In regards to the paragraph: I will not do your work for you. Try the wikipedia page. I studied WWII in class for four months you cannot simply expect it to be summed up in a paragraph.

What do you think of event planners for kids birthday parties?

November 18, 2009 - 7:13 pm 8 Comments

Would you rather do it yourself or would you just hire someone to organize the event (to your liking of course!) I hear they send out invitions to ordering and picking up the cake and many other services. It took me a while to organize by daughters first b-day! Has anyone ever used event planners? Any experiences? Thanks!

They’re only young once. You can do it. I’ve been a professional organizer for 16 years. You don’t need an event planner. To ease your stress, start planning 4-8 weeks before the big day. Put up party decorations and prepare the food the day before your gala event! Put your favors together a week ahead of time. Working off a party planning checklist to ensure you don’t forget to do something and planning ahead is the key to your success. Do these things and you will be able to enjoy your child’s birthday without feeling stressed and frazzled. It will not only be special, but also memorable.

What is the event called, where mlb players compete in who can hit the most homers, etc?

November 15, 2009 - 1:02 am 11 Comments

I remember watching this event on ESPN, a bunch of major league baseball players were in San Francisco, i think at the Giants’ stadium, and players took turns being thrown pitches and seeing how many home runs they could hit in a row, and other various baseball related events.

Does anyone know what this event is called, and when is the next time it will take place? Thanks!

It is called the Home Run Derby. Next year it will be at Angel Stadium on July 12, 2010.

What types of insurance does an event planner need?

November 11, 2009 - 10:56 pm 1 Comment

I am interested in starting my own business from home as an event planner (no employees, just me). However, I am unsure about the insurance aspect of things.

I will possibly be organising events for a large company and they have told me that I am required to take out Public & Products Liability insurance and Personal Accident cover before I can start working on any of their events. Will the Personal Accident insurance cover my hospital bills if I injure myself? If not, what insurance does?

Could you please advise what type of insurance is required for a home-based event planner.

If there are any event planners out there could you please let me know what insurance you have??

Thanks!

Call an insurance agent. They will know what insurance you need and how much it will cost. The insurance is to cover the people and items at the events you coordinate, not you personally.

What is an event that I could compare to the Columbine shootings?

November 3, 2009 - 11:36 am 5 Comments

I have to write a paper comparing two events that shaped American education.

I am definitely writing about Columbine, because that is the first national event that I really followed since I was 9 at the time.

The other I would like to be about school violence as well. Gang fights or something. It has to be a national event though.

I don’t want to do Virginia Tech or anything dealing with higher education. Just primary and secondary education.

maybe the the whole issue with civil rights schools back a few decades and the problems with segregated black and white schools.

Professional Event Planners: How do you honestly feel about working with committees when planning an event?

November 1, 2009 - 12:07 am 1 Comment

Have you had the experience of being hired as an event planner and then being introduced to a large committee of volunteers ( especially in the non-profit sector) who insert themselves into every aspect of planning? Was it helpful or hurtful? Do you feel you could have done a better job with or without their help? What would you say to a future client about committees if you could be completely honest?

Without.
