Your appreciation of Chris Botti if probably part of the reason you find it difficult to enjoy a player/composer like Dave Douglas. This man has done so much to move jazz forward, while incorporating modern composition techniques, along with some classical/20th century composition techniques, all the while being true and faithful to the legacy of jazz. It’s great to hear a player this good and mature doing something like this Brass Ecstasy Band, and do it extremely well.

Dare you to make it through all 17 minutes of this. I don’t get what the big deal is with this project. Read about it in Downbeat and listened on iTunes. Reminds me of speedwalking. Why not just run? Why set limitations when obvious available enhancements would make it better? Two golf claps, I guess. But I’ll be going back to my Chris Botti records now. Thanks for trying!

I caught Dave live at The Jazz Bakery in LA a couple years ago. I went because my friend Donnie McCaslin was holding down the tenor sax chair.
