What is a good musical theatre ballad for a female teen mezzo soprano to sing for an audition?

I’m auditioning for a musical theatre course and I need two contrasting songs from musical theatre. I already have my upbeat song picked out now I just need a slower song.

The catch is it has to be written before 1960…

WOW… it needs to be BEFORE 1960 huh? The automatically eliminates the frantic years of the 1980’s when so many good musicals got written…

UNLIKE some of these other answers.. from people who merely looked up the COMPOSERS and even GOT THE NAMES OF THE SONGS WRONG or the YEAR THEY WERE WRITTEN was AFTER 1960.. I actually KNOW the songs…

No matter… here are some for you and THE TITLES ARE ACCURATE.. they are NOT just the first line of the song:

A LITTLE BRAINS A LITTLE TALENT.. Damn Yankees

A WONDERFUL GUY.. South Pacific

BLOW GABRIEL BLOW… Anything Goes

CAN’T HELP LOVIN’ DAT MAN O’ MINE.. Show Boat

ALWAYS TRUE TO YOU IN MY FASHION.. Kiss me Kate

BEWITCHED, BOTHERED AND BEWILDERED.. Pal Joey

BILL… Show Boat

DOIN’ WHAT COMES NATURALLY.. Annie get your gun

HAPPY TALK… South Pacific

HELLO YOUNG LOVERS.. The King and I

HERNANDO’S HIDEAWAY.. The Pajama game

HONEY BUN.. South Pacific

HOW ARE THINGS IN GLOCCAMORRA.. Finian’s Rainbow

I GET THE SUN IN THE MORNING AND THE MOON AT NIGHT.. Annie get your gun

I LOVE PARIS… Can Can (Note: this is right on the line.. it was written and produced in 1960)

I HATE MEN… Kiss me Kate

IF I WERE A BELL… Guys and Dolls

I’VE GOT A FEELING I’M FALLING.. Ain’t Misbehavin’

LOOK TO THE RAINBOW… Finian’s Rainbow

LULLABY OF BROADWAY.. 42nd Street

MANY A NEW DAY… Oklahoma

MY LORD AND MASTER.. The King and I

SOME OTHER TIME… On the Town

THE LADY IS A TRAMP.. Babes in Arms

THEY SAY IT’S WONDERFUL.. Annie get your gun

THIS JOINT IS JUMPIN.. Ain’t Misbehavin’

YOU’RE GETTING TO BE A HABIT WITH ME.. 42nd Street

WHATEVER LOLA WANTS, LOLA GETS.. Damn Yankees

I have some others, but they didn’t meet your criteria. I did check the dates on these and the are all from 1960 and before

Good Luck

    Gershwin is good:

    Embraceable You
    The Man I Love
I’ve Got a Crush on You
    Summertime

    So is Cole Porter:

In the Still of the Night
    So in Love
    Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye
    Love For Sale
    Begin the Beguine

    Or Irving Berlin:

    Moonshine Lullabye
    They Say It’s Wonderful
    When I Lost You
