How does the MetroMax tickets purchased for trams in Manchester work?

Are there tickets available where travel is unlimited for the day?

The MetroMax is for unlimited tram travel for a day, all day Saturday and Sunday but only after 9.30am Monday-Friday.

There is a trick to buying them from a machine on the platform as I recall. Something like having to press 2 buttons? We should have new ticketing machines soon. In the meantime you can download full instructions from the Metrolink website.

For unlimited travel by train, tram and bus you’ll need the SystemOne ticket.

For unlimited travel between any two stations (say, your home and office) with no time restrictions you can buy a season ticket. This is what most commuters do, but like I say it’s only good between the two stations you specify. Carry on past your usual destination and the ticket is no longer good.

Check out the local transport authority site GMPTE for lots of info in one spot. The staff at their Travelshops are very helpful.

PS-the people who board the tram asking to see tickets are not ‘ticket collectors’. Nor will they sell you a ticket. They are inspectors who levy fines on ticketless passengers.

I have bought plenty of tickets at a price that might not need be so high if other people were decent and bought tickets like they should.

  2. I never bothered buying a ticket. If an Inspector/ticket collector gets on, buy one from him. 9 times out of 10 you would have a free ride.

In Nottingham, they have ticket collectors on every tram.
