How far in advance to buy airline tickets to get the best price?

We are planning a family trip to NC in October. My mother in law told me she got her ticket for $300 when she came to see us. I’ve been looking now and I have found round trip for all three of us for $557. Should I buy the tickets now? Do you think the price would go up or down from here?

Yes it would be wise to by the tickets now because the general rule of thumb is to purchase your tickets 8-12 weeks before your departure date to insure yourself the cheapest possible ticket. I use this method all the time and it works for me whether I am flying domestically or internationally. Check out websites such as travelocity, orbitz, hotwire, cheapoair, expedia, etc. and at the same time look at regional aircraft website such as southwest, air tran, jet blue etc.
