Does anyone know of an inexpensive outdoor venue for a wedding reception?

February 2, 2010 - 6:34 pm 2 Comments

I’m getting married in June, and I’m looking for a nice, inexpensive outdoor reception venue in Chicago. There are an expected 150-200 people, so please be mindful when answering. I also have a DJ, and would like to have drinks served, so I would also like any permit information, if needed. Thanks so much in advance for your help.

Lincoln Park Zoo.. Garfield Park.. or I think you can rent out the planetarium and they have outdoor areas, as well as the Norderbert Nature Museum.

I don’t know chicago, but I would look into these places, they can give you some guidance.

What’s a good video projector for a movie theater venue?

January 31, 2010 - 9:09 am 4 Comments

Whats one on a good budget, one that is ideal, and also what I should be looking for in a projector that would be used a theater venue with descent to good quality.
It’s for a 4 minute video but is being show to a large crowd.

How big is this theater venue?
Most likely a cheap home theater projector is not going to work very well for you if it’s a commercially sized room.

You should be looking at 2K and 4K projectors if the theater is movie cinema sized. The K does not indicate price, it indicates resolution, both 2K and 4K resolutions are massively better than ‘High Definition’ and may be needed if the screen is to be larger than say 20 ft diagonally in order to maintain sharp picture quality without showing a grid of individual pixels.

For comparison, a typical home theater projector can be projected on a screen up to say about 12 ft in diagonal length. In contrast, a 2K Cinema projector could project on up to a 100 ft screen in some cases and still look good.

Runco, Christie and Barco are popular brands for cinema projectors.
On average you should be prepared to spend anywhere between $5,000 and $50,000 depending on whether the projector is 2K or 4K, whether it supports 3D Projection, and various other important factors (e.g. lamp brightness, contrast etc.)

Where can I find the Beatles Rock Band cutscenes online that play in between each venue you unlock?

January 22, 2010 - 12:44 pm 1 Comment

I want to show them to my teacher… It’s for a graphic arts thing. I just need a link to at least one. NOT the intro, the cutscenes that play in between each venue.

Have you tried the extras? Youtube? Capture cards for recording it?

What are some helpful tips when scouting a wedding venue?

January 20, 2010 - 7:40 am 4 Comments

I’m beginning to plan my wedding and I would like any (no matter how small) tips to use when scouting a venue. Like, are there certain questions I should ask that most people forget, should I be asking for a sampling of the food, etc.

What to Ask Your Wedding Venue:

1. Do you have a facility director? If so, will he be there on my wedding day?

A facility director is like the man behind the curtain at the reception. Because he often works for the facility, he is your go-to person should anything go awry while you’re enjoying your celebration. Be sure to get a list of his responsibilities and confirm his attendance at your wedding before you sign the contract. If the facility itself pays him, you should not have to pay extra for this service. (Note: A tip of $100 to $500 for the facility director is not expected, but for superior service, it is acceptable and appreciated.)

2. Do I have to be a member of the country club?

Since country-club memberships are usually very expensive, most clubs let outsiders hold events there if they are sponsored by a member. Before you even visit any club spaces, inquire about the membership requirements. With the exception of super-exclusive country clubs, there are usually ways around them.

3. Will a shuttle to and from the ceremony and reception be provided?

Making wedding-day transportation a no-brainer for your guests will ensure that things run on time. If the reception site does not make shuttles available, rent your own.

4. At what time will my guests have to leave the facility?

Understanding the timeline of the day will help you plan more efficiently. Ask the reception hall to write the time in the contract. Some sites charge up to $500 an hour for overstaying.

5. Is there a service charge on top of the bill? If so, how much?

Generally speaking, there’s always a service charge for the food and beverages. The average is usually 20 percent of the food and beverage bill. Ask your contact at the reception hall about tipping on top of the service charge. Typically, if the bar is hosted, the bartenders won’t accept tips. If it’s a cash bar, ask about the standard tipping protocol.

6. Must I use vendors of your choosing?

Some venues will expect you to use their caterers and florists. Know that you can sometimes avoid this, but at a hefty cost. Normally, you have to pay a fee to the house caterer for not using it, in addition to paying your own caterer.

7. Are there any consequences for not fulfilling the food and beverage minimum?

If you’ve decided on a cash bar, those purchases may go toward that minimum.

8. Do you allow alcohol and open flames?

Many museums have restrictions about the types of alcohol that can be brought in. Red wine might be a no-no, as might mixers with serious staining potential. Also ask about having candles. Flames are not always a welcome element in places containing storied art.

9. Will there be a hosted bar, a cash bar, or a combination of the two?

This is a personal decision that you and your fiancé should make based on your budget, not one that should be dictated to you. The best answer you can hope for is that there will be a combination.

10. Who is responsible for setting up and tearing down the decor, and when will it be completed?

No matter where your wedding is, find out if you need to hire an extra person to take care of constructing and deconstructing the wedding set. Sites will normally cover this portion of the program for a fee. If your wedding is in a backyard, offer to pay the florist and the caterer extra to help out.

11. Will you rope off an area for parking?

Most likely there will be a parking lot, but there may also be an extra charge for it. Additionally, some institutions require you to use a valet service, which can be a hefty expense, because you have to pay and tip the attendants (about $40 to $60 per attendant).

12. What’s the backup plan?

Make sure the facility has a contingency plan when it comes to bad weather or other unforeseeable circumstances.

13. What’s the corkage fee if I bring my own wine?

Supplying the wine-no matter where your wedding is-could save you money, depending on the corkage fee. Standard fees, which vary from city to city, might run from $8 to $20 a bottle. Even at the higher end, however, this still may prove to be more of a bargain than using the site’s wine selection, which is generally sold at a triple markup.

14. How early can I get into the site to set up?

Reception halls generally allow you ample time for this. But with museums, galleries, theaters, and stadiums, inquire early and often about how much time you have. Occasionally they won’t permit a setup until the public hours of operation are over. For instance, if a gallery closes at 5p.m. on a Saturday and your reception begins at 7 p.m., that will pose a severe time crunch.

15. Are there restrictions for the photographer?

If you’ve booked the reception at your favorite art museum, only to be told that flashing camera lights are prohibited near the painting where your fiancĂ© first kissed you, you might want to rethink that location.

16. Are there any additional costs-c

How early to do you get into a Nickelback concert venue with Nickelback Fan Club Member Card?

January 16, 2010 - 6:59 am 3 Comments

was thinking about getting a fan club membership… anybody know how early you can get in to the venue with the fanclub?

I don’t know specifically about Nickelback Fan Club, but I do know for many fan club memberships you get meet and greets before the show and early entry to the show. If this is the case for Nickelback you only have to get there just before the meet and greet. You’ll let them know you will be attending the meet in greet in whatever city and they will give you a time. Get there maybe 20 minutes before that time. Go to the meet and greet and then they will let you in the venue. There’s no need to get there earlier because you get in first anyway so you dont have to wait in line.

Looking for a good venue in Orlando for a small wedding - any one have any good ideas?

January 6, 2010 - 4:03 pm 2 Comments

Would prefer an outdoor venue for the ceremony. Either indoor or outdoor for the reception. Probably on 30 people or so. Does anyone have a good place where we could have this type of wedding? We’re definitely not looking for anything too expensive.

Can you exchange concert tickets if you have bought them for the wrong venue?

November 30, 2009 - 7:49 am 2 Comments

My sister bought me tickets for the Kerrang! Relentless Energy Drink Tour, but I was already planning to go with my friends in a completely different place. I wanted to go to Newcastle, but she bought them for Leeds. She seems determined that you can’t exchange them if you bought them for the wrong venue - is this true? Is there anything I can do?

Sell them. You might even make a profit.

Can I use photography to negotiate with my wedding venue?

November 15, 2009 - 1:02 am 13 Comments

I’m looking into a wedding at a non-traditional venue in New York City, but one that wants to start doing lots of weddings. They have no pictures or information on their website, because they’ve only done a couple of events so far.

Do you think they’d give me a bigger break on the catering if I agree to let them use my event photos to promote the venue?

Possibly, but keep in mind that your photographer will have to give you the rights to do that with your photos. Talk to him/her about it… they will more than likely be happy to let the venue use the photographs and get his/her name out there even more.

Good luck!

Southern california wedding venue with our own caterer?

November 11, 2009 - 10:56 pm 2 Comments

We live in Inland Empire area (Upland, Rancho Cucamonga, Ontario etc)

We are planning to get married this summer (09′). I know it is kind of late to look for venues since it is already April.

We are looking for a nice (& beautiful at sunset) garden type wedding venue with a reception area that lets you bring your own caterer and is not too pricey.

If you have any suggestions that would be great!

I thought I’d answered but apparently did not post it - then I did some poking around and found this site where you can customize your search options. I entered Orange County, Garden, Catering N/A — I don’t know exactly where you’re looking for so you may want to poke a little more…
