What’s a good video projector for a movie theater venue?
Whats one on a good budget, one that is ideal, and also what I should be looking for in a projector that would be used a theater venue with descent to good quality.
It’s for a 4 minute video but is being show to a large crowd.
How big is this theater venue?
Most likely a cheap home theater projector is not going to work very well for you if it’s a commercially sized room.
You should be looking at 2K and 4K projectors if the theater is movie cinema sized. The K does not indicate price, it indicates resolution, both 2K and 4K resolutions are massively better than ‘High Definition’ and may be needed if the screen is to be larger than say 20 ft diagonally in order to maintain sharp picture quality without showing a grid of individual pixels.
For comparison, a typical home theater projector can be projected on a screen up to say about 12 ft in diagonal length. In contrast, a 2K Cinema projector could project on up to a 100 ft screen in some cases and still look good.
Runco, Christie and Barco are popular brands for cinema projectors.
On average you should be prepared to spend anywhere between $5,000 and $50,000 depending on whether the projector is 2K or 4K, whether it supports 3D Projection, and various other important factors (e.g. lamp brightness, contrast etc.)

i got one
I recommend you go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on projectors. After reading the review a couple of years ago I purchase a Panasonic projector. So far I have had no problem and the picture is amassing. Keep in mind that projector lamps don’t last very long (life is normally 2,000 hours). I only use my projectors for watching blu ray disc movies on a 116" screen. Hope that this will help you out.

okay, the length of the video is somewhat immaterial. What matters here is the size of the screen, the ambient lighting conditions, the resolution of the source material…
As a projectionist and a manufacturer’s certified repair tech for several different brands including barco I love the picture quality of barco, but find them to be too pricey. The replacement bulbs for a barco flm hd12 (12000 lumens) which is what we use on a 16 to 20 foot wide screen are about 5,000 dollars and they last 1000 hours (though not really/they’ve never lasted as long as the manufacturer specs). And even 12000 lumens isn’t very bright in high ambient light situations. By the way barco’s 12k projectors with lens is going to cost around 40 grand….
A 3000 lumen projector in a very dark room will suffice if the screen size is around 12 feet wide… Sanyo makes cheaper easier to set up projectors (which are actually sold under a lot of brand name, including christie, eiki, infocus). Their 12 k projector is about 16 grand without lens and uses four 400 dollar bulbs so that if one fails the projector still works (average bulb life also 1000 hours).
Your best bet is to look at ebay for a used projector (I’ll sell you a used barco 3000 lumen projector for $300 plus shipping).
Rentals vary wildly, a 3000 lumen projector not delivered, without tech goes for $125 a day from my shop. 6000 lumens $400, 12k lumens $550, 15k $700….
by the way Ben, k means 1000 and usually refers to the light output in lumens. espescially since hidef is now usually 1920 x1080p (not 4k).. 1920 being the total horizontal pixel count and 1080 progressive being the vertical (lines) resolution.
